Meditations on the Breath
(Suitable for all levels)

The breath is most important part of the yoga practice. The breath is also central to every single moment of our human existence.

During this two part workshop, we will work with the breath in its subtle forms, with kriyas (cleansing practices), pranyama, and anapasati (observation of respiration) meditation; and in its more gross form, the asana practice.

The breath is the link between the body and the mind. When the breath is steady, the mind is steady. The pranayama practice works to focus and calm the mind, allowing for greater mental clarity and a decrease in emotional reactivity, among other therapeutic and spiritual benefits.

When doing the physical postures, if we can keep the awareness on the breath, synchronize the breath and the movement, and keep the breath steady and even throughout the practice, especially during the transitions and the more challenging postures, then we allow the body to remain in a state of inner calm and homeostasis and we can receive the more subtle benefits of the practice. This will then directly transfer to any stressful or challenging situations we face in our lives. We find ourselves better able to handle anything that Life gives us. The asana practice will be an ashtanga based guided class, focusing on key poses. Prepare to move slowly, with intention, awareness, and kindness.

Please come with an empty stomach (no food 3 hours before) and an open mind and heart.

An Introduction to the Ashtanga Primary Series (90 mins)

Ashtanga yoga is a dynamic and physically challenging practice that follows a set sequence of poses. The breath is synchronized with the movement in a beautiful, meditative dance.
The three focal points of ashtanga are the breath (breathing with sound), bandhas (internal energetic locks in the pelvic floor and lower abdomen), and dristi (gazing point). The sequence is progressive in nature and each pose builds upon the previous one, becoming more challenging as one advances in the practice over time.

Many people are weary of trying ashtanga, but Summer will tailor the practice to suit your body and your needs. Modifications will be offered where necessary.

The primary series is called Yoga Chikitsa in sanskrit meaning "Yoga Therapy" and it allows for detoxification of the organs and purification of both body and mind. The deeply healing practice of Ashtanga yoga keeps the body fit and strong, free from all dis-ease.

During this hour workshop, we will go over the sun salutations, key standing and seated poses, backbends, and finishing sequence. You will leave feeling energized and centered, and with a sequence of poses you can continue to practice on your own.

Come move, breath and sweat with Summer and she will show you that yoga is for every BODY!

13:30 - 16:00
Find strength and stability and explore preparations for Backbends

Would you like to gain more strength and stability and learn how to use it to the fullest in your asana practice? Would you like to do backbends in a safe and intelligent way?

By doing different core strengthening exercises and preparations for Urdhva Dhanurasana, we will work to open the front and back body and lengthen the psoas.

A backbend is really full body bend and requires strength in the legs, openness in the shoulders and upper back, and mobility in the spine.

Drawing upon poses from both the primary and intermediate series of Ashtanga, Summer will show you how to safely prepare for backbends and practice them with awareness.

Yogis of all levels will benefit from this workshop which will be equal parts challenging, educational and experimental.
