INTRODUCTION TO JIVAMUKTI YOGA AND FOCUS ON STANDING POSES

Jivamukti is Hip: in the eighties, Sharon Gannon & David Life, the founders of the Jivamukti Yoga method, brought Yoga into the most radical underground communities in the East Village of New York. In doing so, they integrated the hidden and mysterious teachings of yoga into the artistic avant-garde, and made Yoga “Hip”, i.e. relevant for people living in a vibrant, creative and forward thinking urban environment. Jivamukti is spiritualized performance art, where poetry, dance, asana and music are coming together with Vedic wisdom teachings, and the audience are its actors.

Jivamukti is Hot, because it addresses the most burning issues of our times. The Asana practice generates inner heat that allows practitioners to transform stagnation in the body and melt away old paradigms, habits and conditioned behavior in the mind.

Jivamukti is Holy. When we clear physical and mental obstacles out of the way, we have an opportunity to experience what was revealed in the Shrutis (sacred texts of India), which is that essentially, we are made of pure love, pure light, and pure joy.

Select verses from the Bhagavad Gita are teaching us how to build a sequence of poses that evoke a refreshing perspective on stability and equilibrium in our daily lives.

THE FIVE TENETS OF JIVAMUKTI YOGA WITH FOCUS ON FORWARD BENDS AND HIP OPENERS

This core philosophy is expressed through 5 tenets, which form the foundation of Jivamukti Yoga. 1. Ahimsa: A nonviolent, compassionate lifestyle extending to other animals, the environment and all living beings, emphasizing ethical vegetarianism (veganism) and animal rights. 2. Bhakti: Acknowledgment that God/Self-realization is the goal of all yoga practices; can be expressed through chanting, the setting of a high intention for the practice or other devotional practices. 3. Dhyana: Meditation: connecting to that eternal unchanging reality within. 4. Nada: The development of a sound body and mind through deep listening; can be incorporated in a class using recorded music, spoken word, silence or even the teacher’s voice. 5. Shastra: Study of the ancient yogic teachings, including Sanskrit chanting, drawn from the Focus of the Month to the extent possible. The Class will have a focus on Hip Openers, which allow us to cleanse relationships that keep us in an obsessive and unstable place, so that we can allow the energy to move into higher levels of consciousness. Focus is on mobility in the hip joint, as well as working length with breath in forward bends.

THE ART OF VINYASA KRAMA AND FOCUS ON BACKBENDING

Vinyasa is commonly known as a vague concept of “Flow Yoga.” In this class, we will go more deeply into the esoteric meaning of Vinyasa Krama, and how to execute it with precision, both on the mat and in life. Backbends are an age-old recipe for letting go of muscular contractions and emotional hardening in the heart region. This unleashes the discovery of an unlimited potential for physical, emotional and spiritual freedom. Spiritual teachings will be drawn from the Jivamukti Focus of the Month.
